Searching for Books Using the Online Catalog December 17, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — corteztafolla @ 9:53 am

Step 1: Log into the online catalog at http://www2.youseemore.com/cps/school.asp?branch=8550

Note: You can use either the LS2 Version of the catalog or the Classic Version. The Classic catalog is not as flashy but tends to have faster download times.

Step 2: You can type in a keyword (for example football, romance, vampires, teens, etc..) or the author or title of a book.

Step 3: Once you type something the computer will display all of the titles we currently own at Solorio. You can choose a book by clicking on the title or book cover.

Step 4: Once you select a book you have a few options towards the bottom: Summaries, Reviews, Character Information, & Excerpts.

By clicking on the Summaries box you will be able to read what the book is about.

By clicking on the Reviews box you can read what others are saying about the book (i.e. is it good, bad, etc..)

By clicking on the Character Information box you can find out the names and descriptions of the book’s main characters, the genre, and the topics covered by the book.

By clicking on the Excerpts box you can read a small portion of the book. A good rule of thumb is that if you identify 5 or more words you do not recognize then perhaps the book may be a little too difficult for you to read at this time so searching for another one may be a good idea.

Step 5: Once you have selected a book then it’s time to CHECK IT OUT :) Of course you want to look at the books status to see if it’s even available.

Saving Searches Using Our Online Catalog November 30, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — corteztafolla @ 11:16 pm

You can save a search. Why would you want to do this? Maybe you were looking for books on a certain topic but that darn bell rings so you know you have to get to class pronto, so instead of doing it all over again just save your search and when your ready it will be there waiting for you the next time you log in.  It’s all about working smarter not harder!  Follow the steps in order to complete this assignment and learn how to use this handy tool.

Step 1: Log into Solorio’s Online Catalog

https://library.cps.k12.il.us:9058/?config=8550#bookriver

Step 2: Click on the My Account link located on the right side of the computer screen

Step3: Log in using your CPS username and password.

Your username and password are the same as your FirstClass username and password, however you need to type in instr\ in front of your username. If you do not have an active FirstClass account, or have lost your password, please contact your technology teacher.

Note that you can see any loans, requests, or fines on your account. You can also see any saved searches (this is helpful when you need to come back to a search that you had previously started) or saved lists (helpful for books you might want to check out at a later date).

Step 4: Conduct a search on Shakespeare and click on the SAVE SEARCH BOX on the right hand right side.

Step 5: A box will pop up asking you to title your search so you can come back later and look it up. Name your search something that will remind you what you were looking for. For example, you searched for Shakespeare so  you could name your search Shakespeare.

Step 6: Click on the MY SAVED SEARCHES tab towards the bottom to make sure it went through.

Step 7: In order to receive credit for this assignment you need to show your saved searches to Mrs. Cortez-Tafolla or your classroom teacher. You will not be able to print this part out so just raise your hand and we will come to you.
